KNOTT BROUGHTON SCARBOUGH CRENSHAW

When families reside in the same community for generations after generations, they not only form a very close association, but they begin to feel as one unit in that community – a family. Down through the years, the four branches of our family have become one large branch by not only connecting through bloodlines caused by intermarriages, but also because of associating and fellowshipping together every two years. We give credit to Mary Ellen Broughton Knott for having been the originator of this family reunion. She personally extended invitations to members of the other families outside of her children and their families to attend when and wherever it was being held.
The Knott’s family history began with the uniting in marriage of Wiley Knott and Binna Knott who had a total of sixteen children including our immediate descendant Bunnie Knott. The history continues with Bunnie Knott’s marriage to Mary Brown (Straughter) Knott and they gave birth to four children – William, Robert, Wiley, and Claiborne. The first direct linkage to the Broughton and Scarbough families was the union in marriage of Robert Knott and Mary Ellen Broughton who had eight children – Juanita, Ulyses, Augustine, Claiborne Columbus, Mattie, Velma, John, and Addie Rae. Another linkage occurred when William Knott’s daughter Minnie Mae married Mary Broughton Knott’s brother, John Henry Broughton Jr. and they had one son – John Arthur (Sonny). The linkage did not stop here. The last one was a connection in marriage of William Knott and Marty Roberts Knott’s son Clarence Lee Knott who married Ethel Lee Scarbough.
The other three families’ history began with the union of Rebecca Davis and Henry Hollinger. They had two children – Lueyllyn and Henry Jr. Luellyn married Richmond Scarbough Sr. and one child was born – Arlecee Scarbough Jr. who married Ethel Floyd. This union resulted in eight siblings – Luella, Ida May, Richmond III, Theodore, Ethel Lee, a set of twins Ernestine and Celestine, Samuel, and Josie.
After the death of Richmond Scarbough Sr. Luellyn after remaining unmarried for a number of years, married John Henry Broughton. Their children were Mary Ellen, Irene (Arthurine), and John Henry Jr. As indicated above Mary Ellen Broughton and her brother, John Henry Broughton, and Ethel Lee Scarbough all married into the Knott’s family. The other daughter of John Henry Broughton and Luellyn was Irene Broughton who married R.D. (Doc) Crenshaw and they had six children Annie Louise, John Clinton (Bud), R.D. Jr. Laura Jean (twin was still born), Robert Henry, and Alexander (June Bug).
These four branches have made one very strong tree which has created many strong productive and successful seeds that have been scattered and blown throughout the United States and even into a few foreign countries. Now presently, it has become one of the many successful groves. With God’s continued grace and mercy, we will continue to prosper as a united family unit.
Wiley and Binna Knott’s parents were brought to America as slaves before 1840 to the state of Pennsylvania. It is not known how they became indentured servants on the Knott’s Berry Farm in that state nor how many children they had.
The information above has somewhat displayed our individual roots for each of the four branches and also attempted to show how they were connected through intermarriages and association. This makes us become one entity as we come together every two years.
